The United States and Ukraine will sign a new security agreement that seeks to strengthen kyiv’s defense capabilities against Russia, a senior official from President Joe Biden’s administration announced this Wednesday, en route to Italy to participate in the G7 summit.

“Our goal here is simple: we want to demonstrate that the United States stands with the people of Ukraine and that we stand with them,” said White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, adding that this commitment is “a sign of our determination” against Russian aggression.

Sullivan added that 15 countries have already shown their support for the agreement, which will be signed on Thursday by Biden and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, within their programs at the high-level meeting, to strengthen Ukraine’s “defensive deterrence capacity.” , not only in the present, but in the future.

The new pact “establishes a framework for how we will work with Ukraine and with other allies and partners to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs in terms of physical capacity, as well as intelligence and other capabilities to be able to defend itself effectively,” said the official, who He explained that this pact “does not include any commitment to use our own forces.”

“By signing this, we will also send a signal to Russia of our determination. If Vladimir Putin thinks he can survive the coalition that supports Ukraine, he is wrong,” Sullivan insisted to the press aboard the presidential plane.

The White House had already announced that Biden would meet again with Zelenskyy at the Group of Seven summit, which will be held in Italy from June 13 to 15.

Both presidents met recently during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings that changed the course of World War II and contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

The Democratic president he then apologized to Zelenskyy due to the delay in military aid shipments, stalled in Congress due to failed negotiations with the most extreme wing of the Republican party.

Sullivan warned that to implement this new agreement with Ukraine they intend to work with legislators from both sides.

“This document follows two years of substantial provision of resources, military assistance, intelligence and economic support, and essentially projects continued support for Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and deter future aggression. (…) It does not include specific dollar figures. , includes a commitment to work with Congress on sustainable financing in the future,” he noted.

The G7 summit will not only address the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but also trade with China, the handling of artificial intelligence and the challenges in development aid in African countries.

The leaders of the powerful Group of Seven, which includes the US, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, are also expected to announce new sanctions against Moscow.

The White House National Security Advisor also announced that Washington will put into effect “radical new measures to intensify pressure on Russia,” which will increase the risks assumed by foreign financial institutions “in dealing with Russia’s war economy.”
