The leaders of the United States, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden held a meeting in Helsinki this Thursday in which, among other matters, they celebrated Turkey’s decision to unblock the ratification of Sweden’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance.
Within the framework of the third Summit of Nordic Leaders and the United States, the attendees stressed “the importance of the Alliance for regional and transatlantic security and stability,” according to a joint statement at the end of the event.
“American and Nordic leaders warmly welcome the July 10, 2023 statement by Sweden, Turkey and NATO Secretary General (Jens) Stoltenberg and look forward to Sweden joining NATO as soon as possible,” it reads. the writing.
Thus, the countries have agreed that the entry of Finland and the future accession of Sweden “will strengthen the ability of the Nordic region to contribute even more to the security of all NATO Allies.” The Nordics, for their part, have appreciated Washington’s leadership.
On the other hand, they have reiterated their strong condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as their continued support for the Kiev authorities “in terms of security, economic, legal and humanitarian” in order to achieve a “just and lasting peace” based in the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
The meeting was attended by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and his Finnish counterpart, Sauli Niinisto, together with the Prime Ministers of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, Mette Frederiksen, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Jonas Har Stere and Ulf Kristersson, respectively. .
