April 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Members of the Supreme Military Committees of Iraq and the International Coalition, led by the United States, have highlighted the ability of the Iraqi Army to defeat the jihadist group Islamic State once the coalition forces, created to fight terrorists, have left the country at the request of Baghdad.
“On April 8, in the capital, Baghdad, the Iraqi Supreme Military Committee met with the Supreme Military Committee of the International Coalition in Iraq. (…) The two sides have highlighted the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces to defeat the Islamic State,” the spokesman for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Yahya Rasul, reported this Tuesday night on his account on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
In this sense, the committees have praised the efforts to end the armed group, as well as to prevent its return, as part of supporting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country.
In addition, both parties have agreed to continue presenting security, capacity and operational assessments of the Iraqi forces to make a decision regarding the withdrawal schedule of the international coalition.
Iraq and the United States began holding a series of meetings in February to draw up a 'road map' that will ultimately set a specific date for the departure of international troops in the shortest possible time after the tensions that arose as a result of Washington's bombings in the country against pro-Iran militias, a measure of retaliation for their attacks against US bases in the region.
The coalition was born in 2014 at the height of the rise of the Islamic State, which came to control large areas of Syria and Iraq taking advantage of the instability. Led by the United States, Spain contributes around 180 soldiers who collaborate to train and qualify Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism.
