The US and Cuba resume their security talks in Havana

Representatives of the governments of the United States and Cuba resumed talks on security during an official visit to Havana, between Wednesday and Thursday, reported the State Department.

“This type of dialogue enhances the national security of the United States by improving coordination in law enforcement, which allows the United States to better protect its citizens and bring transnational criminals to justice.” he pointed on Thursday the Foreign Ministry, through a statement.

The US government, however, stressed that these talks “have no impact” on the Biden Administration’s position on “critical Human Rights issues” in Cuba.

Representatives of the Departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security led the dialogue on behalf of Washington. Among the topics addressed were efforts against cybercrime, terrorist threats and drug trafficking.

Former President Donald Trump placed Cuba on the blacklist of state sponsors of terrorism shortly before his term ended and the Biden Administration has been reviewing the provision since he took office in January 2021.

Biden has begun to reverse some of Trump’s tough policies but has upheld others, insisting that the Cuban government must improve its human rights record.

This bilateral meeting was the first of its kind since, in 2018, during the presidency of Donald Trump, the dialogue on the application of laws, which began in 2015 during the term of former President Barack Obama, was suspended.
