17 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The United States ambassador to Russia, Lynn Tracy, has visited this Monday the journalist of ‘The Wall Street Journal’ Evan Gershkovich, imprisoned in Lefortovo, in the city of Yekaterinburg, after being accused of espionage by Russia.

The United States Embassy in Russia has reported on its official Twitter profile that Tracy has visited the journalist, being “the first time” that a US diplomat has met him since his arrest more than two weeks ago.

“He is in good health and remains strong. We reiterate our call for his immediate release,” the US Embassy in Russia said in a publication in both English and Russian on the aforementioned social network.

The journalist was arrested after having been collecting information about the Wagner Group, owned by the oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, considered a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and who has sent mercenaries to Ukraine.

The last article by Gershkovich, who faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison, was published by ‘The Wall Street Journal’ and dates from March 28 under the headline ‘Russia’s economy is beginning to unravel’.

The journalist previously worked for the French news agency AFP and the Russian newspaper ‘The Moscow Times’. Likewise, he has published in ‘The New York Times’, ‘The Economist’, ‘MIT Technology Review’, ‘Foreign Policy’ and Politico Europe, among other media, according to his website.
