The US allocates a millionaire item to the humanitarian assistance of Venezuelans in the region

With the aim of helping to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and the situation of Venezuelans who transit or settle in countries in the region, the United States government announced on Thursday the approval of a new millionaire item.

“The United States today announced nearly $376 million in new humanitarian assistance to respond to the needs of vulnerable Venezuelans in Venezuela, Venezuelan refugees and migrants, and their generous host communities throughout the region,” the State Department said in a statement. signed by Secretary Antony Blinken.

The announcement is in accordance with the commitments made by the White House last June at the Summit of the Americas, which concluded with the Declaration of Los Angeles.

The financial package is broken down into 18i million dollars that will be managed by the Office of Population, Refugees and Migration of the Department of State and another 194 million managed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID, for its acronym in English).

Data from the United Nations refugee agency puts 6.8 million displaced Venezuelans who have fled the humanitarian crisis in their country in the last five years.

In recent months, the United States has experienced a unusual increase in immigrants in an irregular situation who arrive mainly through the southern border. The largest number, reports the Border Patrol, are fleeing from “regimes” in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.

Brazil, Mexico and Costa Rica are among the countries in the region that have assimilated the most Venezuelan refugees in recent years, thus forming a group of 17 countries that have given shelter to those fleeing Venezuela.

After the economic, political and security crisis within the Venezuelan nation, the US has allocated almost 2.7 billion dollars since 2017. US support is intended, among other areas, for food assistance, emergency shelter, access to health care, health, water supplies and sanitation and hygiene.
