The United States will impose restrictions on the visas of Ugandans complicit in the anti-LGBT law

The US State Department has announced that it is “taking the first steps” to impose visa restrictions on Ugandans complicit in or responsible for “undermining the democratic process in Uganda”, in reference to the recently passed anti-LGBT law in the country. .

“The United States government will continue to evaluate further actions under this policy, as well as the use of other tools at our disposal, to promote accountability for Ugandan officials and others responsible or complicit in undermining democracy in Uganda, abusing of Human Rights, including those of LGBTQI+ people, or participating in corrupt practices,” reads a statement from the State Department.

In addition, he has reiterated the support of the United States for the inhabitants of the country and that he will continue to be “committed” to “respect for Human Rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and throughout the world.”

Last Tuesday, Washington already advised against travel to Uganda due to the enactment of said law as it poses a serious risk to anyone who can be identified as LGTBI, since the death penalty is even contemplated for some cases. Added to this is the insecurity or terrorism that exists in the country.

The norm contemplates life imprisonment for sexual relations between people of the same sex and up to 10 years in prison for pretending to do so. It also punishes the promotion of homosexuality, while “aggravated homosexuality”, for example if the victim is under 14 or over 75, has a disability or the relationship involves people with HIV.
