The United States expresses its concern about the expiration of the truce in Yemen

Oct. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States government has shown on Monday its “deep” concern over the fact that the truce in Yemen mediated by the UN has expired on October 2 without the parties to the conflict having reached an agreement to extend it.

The Biden Administration has recalled that Yemeni citizens have experienced the “tangible benefits” provided by the truce: the longest period of calm since the beginning of the war, a drastic reduction in civilian casualties, a four times greater flow of fuel in Yemen’s northern ports and commercial flights that enable more than 25,000 Yemenis to seek medical care and reunite with loved ones abroad.

“Much more is undoubtedly needed, and the UN’s extended truce proposal would provide just that: provide salaries for tens of thousands of civil servants who have not been paid in years, open up roads across the country, expand international flights and to facilitate the authorization process for fuel ships to enter the port of Al Hudaydah,” the State Department said in a statement.

According to the White House, the UN proposal would allow negotiations to start on “a complete ceasefire” and an inclusive political process, led by the Yemenis, that would put an end to the war in a lasting way.

Still, the United States has “welcomed” the Yemeni government’s support for the UN extended truce proposal, as well as the strong support from countries in the region, the UN Security Council and other partners. international.

“The overwhelming consensus in support of the UN-brokered truce is a testament to its potential to put Yemen on the path to peace and recovery. The United States urges the Houthis to continue negotiations in good faith and work with the UN to reach an agreement that extends the truce and keeps Yemen on the path of peace,” the United States government added.

For the Biden Administration, the truce represents “the best chance for peace” the Yemenis have had in years, and the only way to truly alleviate the suffering of the Yemenis is negotiation, not war.
