The governments of the United States and Uruguay signed a memorandum of understanding on certain critical and emerging technologies, the countries said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay and the Department of Commerce and the Department of State of the United States signed the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in certain critical and emerging technologies.
The document was signed on Wednesday, April 10 in Montevideo by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar Paganini, the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Elisa Facio, and by Marisa Lago, Undersecretary of International Trade of the Department of Commerce.
Building on the June 2023 Oval Office meeting between President Luis Lacalle Pou and President Joe Biden and the February 2024 Annual Bilateral Interministerial Dialogue in Washington, DC, the delegations signed the memorandum of understanding to demonstrate their shared commitment to advancing innovation, sustainability and economic opportunity, as well as increasing trade. In this way, we will seek to increase cooperation and outline a concrete path to advance the development and deployment of certain critical and emerging technologies.
The memorandum of understanding launches a bilateral working group that seeks to focus on cooperation in the areas of semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data flows, clean energy, telecommunications, cybersecurity and biotechnology.
Within the framework of the bilateral working group, Uruguay and the United States will determine the specific collaborative activities that both countries intend to carry out, among others, the development and execution of an action plan on cutting-edge technology opportunities (ALTO). acronym in English).
