The British authorities have summoned the Chinese ambassador to the country, Zheng Zeguang, this Tuesday, a day after three men were charged by the United Kingdom Justice Department for allegedly violating the national security law by collaborating with the Hong Kong Intelligence services. Kong and incurring a crime of “foreign interference.”
The call, sent by the Foreign Minister himself, David Cameron, comes as the Government criticizes China’s “pattern of behaviour” towards the country, which includes possible cyber attacks against British infrastructure.
The three defendants in question have been identified as Chi Leung Wai, 38, Matthew Trickett, 37, and Chung Biu Yuen, 63, the London Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Wai is an agent of the United Kingdom Border Guard, Trickett works for Immigration and Yuen worked for the Hong Kong Police but is retired, according to information collected by the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’. All of them would have been collecting sensitive information, carrying out surveillance and transmitting data to the Hong Kong Government, especially from members of the Hong Kong diaspora in the United Kingdom.
However, the Chinese Embassy has described these charges as “invention” and has asserted that it is a “flagrant” accusation against Hong Kong, a former British colony. “For some time now, the United Kingdom has been making accusations against Hong Kong, including some about espionage and cyber attacks. All of these accusations have no basis whatsoever,” the diplomatic legation stated, accusing the British authorities of “harassment.”
