MADRID 7 Oct. () –
The Government of the United Kingdom insisted this Monday that “there are no doubts about British sovereignty” in both Gibraltar and the Malvinas, ruling out any extrapolation to both territories of the agreement signed last week with Mauritius to give this country control over the Chagos Archipelago.
A Downing Street spokesperson has indicated that the sovereignty of Gibraltar and the Falklands “is not open to negotiations”, despite the fact that the Argentine Government has used the historic pact on Chagos known last Thursday to revive its territorial demands.
“Chagos is a unique situation with a unique history,” the spokesperson concluded, in statements collected by Sky News and in which, in the face of criticism from the opposition, he wanted to emphasize that the previous conservative government already led to carried out more than a dozen negotiations with Mauritius related to this case.
In addition to London, the chief minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, also stated last week that the agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius for the transfer of sovereignty of the Chagos archipelago “sets absolutely no precedent” on the future of the Rock, since These are “completely different” cases.
Picardo has drawn clear differences with the Gibraltar context, pointing out for example that, in the case of the Rock, London has always made it clear that “it will not enter into negotiations on sovereignty” with Madrid, both with conservative and Labor governments. Thus, he has defended the right of Gibraltarians to “determine their own future”, always under the British umbrella.
