The Histadrut — Israel’s trade union organization — has called off the demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday against the judicial reform after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspended processing of the controversial proposal.
However, the main citizen groups that are also promoting the protests have warned that they will continue with the demonstrations until the Government completely renounces the judicial reform, according to the Israeli newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
Prime Minister Netanyahu announced on Monday the suspension of the processing of the controversial judicial reform, which has caused massive protests and an unprecedented response in the country.
“I’m going to take some time to talk,” Netanyahu said in a brief message to the nation, where he acknowledged that the main objective of this decision is to “achieve a broad consensus” on the proposal. The third and final parliamentary reading of the judicial reform will be paralyzed until the next session of the Knesset, scheduled for several weeks from now.
The Israeli leader has stressed that his government “will never accept a civil war” derived from the current political crisis and has warned that this situation poses “a real threat to national unity”.
