The UN welcomes the agreement between the RSF and the Sudanese Army

May 13. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The UN has celebrated the ‘Declaration of Commitment’, the preliminary agreement between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Army signed this Friday in the Saudi city of Jeddah, in which they have promised to allow the passage of aid humanitarian aid and to protect civilians in areas where combat is the scene.

“While humanitarian workers, particularly local partners, have continued to work under very difficult circumstances, the Secretary-General — of the UN, António Guterres — hopes that this ‘Declaration’ will ensure that the relief operation can be scaled up quickly and safely to meet the needs of millions of people in Sudan,” said the spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement.

Dujarric has assured that the United Nations “will spare no effort” to help put the ‘Declaration of Commitment’ into practice and that they will continue to provide humanitarian aid regardless of the existence of a ceasefire.

In addition, Guterres has asked that this agreement be accompanied by an immediate ceasefire and that talks be addressed so that a permanent cessation of hostilities can be reached.

For his part, the UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, has described the agreement as a “critical step” towards the protection of civilians and to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid safely.
