The United Nations special representative for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, celebrated this Tuesday before the United Nations Security Council that there is a “new dynamic” of political cooperation in Libya in view of the holding of the expected elections.
“Since my report on February 27, there has been a new dynamic in Libya. Intensive stakeholder consultations have taken place. Institutional and political leaders have also taken steps to advance the political process,” he said.
In this sense, Bathily has urged both the Libyan leaders and the international community to maintain the “current momentum” of the latest talks held between the parties in Tunis, Tripoli, Benghasi and Sebha.
His words come after senior military officials from the rival Libyan administrations of Tripoli and eastern Libya, the so-called 5+5 Military Commission, pledged to safeguard the country’s stability, according to the conclusions of the meeting held in Benghasi, in the east of the country, under the auspices of the UN.
The ‘road map’ of the elections, initially scheduled for the end of 2021, is completely paralyzed by the conflict between Tripoli and the parallel authorities in the east of the country, and the security of the population is threatened by sporadic clashes between armed groups, particularly in areas close to oil fields.
