The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, warned on Tuesday that the conflict in Sudan could unleash “great suffering” for years, crossing borders and delaying the development of the region.
“These ten days of violence and chaos are heartbreaking. A large-scale, protracted war is unbearable just to think about. Sudan borders seven countries, all of which have been involved in conflict or faced serious civil unrest over the past decade.” Guterres added.
Sudan could endanger the situation in the Sahel, a region where insecurity and political instability have led these countries to a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation that could worsen, according to the United Nations secretary general.
He has also pointed out that in the area, hit by the climate emergency and high levels of debt, poverty and hunger reign, and that a great famine is being avoided exclusively by humanitarian aid.
“The Sudanese people have made their wishes very clear. They want peace and the restoration of civil government through a democratic transition,” Guterres explained, and has asked the contenders to “silence the guns immediately.”
At least 450 people have been killed — including four UN members — more than 4,000 people have been injured and tens of thousands have fled their homes, according to UN data.
