The UN warns of death threats against the head of the United Nations mission in Sudan

12 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The United Nations has expressed concern about the death threats made by an Islamist leader against the head of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, Volker Perthes, in a video broadcast on social networks and has urged the authorities to “guarantee” the security of the staff in the country.

“Using language that incites violence will exacerbate divisions within the country and will not deter the UN from fulfilling its functions,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General António Guterres.

In this sense, he has urged the Sudanese authorities at a press conference to “guarantee” the security of the mission. On the other hand, a UNITAMS spokeswoman, May Yaacoub, has called on the Sudanese government to take “legal” action, as well as a proper investigation into the recording.

Specifically, in the video, broadcast on social networks, an individual linked to Islamist groups has requested a fatwa or Islamic edict to authorize the murder of Perthes during an event organized by an Islamist group in Khartoum, the newspaper ‘Sudan Tribune’ has reported. .
