The UN warned on Tuesday that Syria, which has been mired in a civil war since 2011, is experiencing a new “wave of violence” and has accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of torturing prisoners in the country’s jails.
Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria, said during the presentation of the latest report that recent fighting in the northeast between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – which are supported by the United States – and government troops, Arab tribes and militias backed by Iran have increased.
During a presentation to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Pinheido also pointed to an intensification of the bombings carried out by Israel against targets located in Syria as part of its offensive in Gaza, which began on October 7, the commission said in a statement.
Pro-Iranian militias have been the main victims of these attacks from Israel, and have responded by attacking US bases, a matter that has led US troops to take retaliatory measures.
The commission points to an upsurge in generalised violence and says that six countries have taken “military” action on Syrian soil, including Russia, the United States and Turkey, which it accuses of committing “illegal acts” in Syria.
The UN has also condemned the use of internationally banned cluster munitions in the north-east of the country, which has caused civilian casualties, including children. According to UN data, these actions could amount to war crimes.
