The UN urges “international unity” on the second anniversary of the coup in Burma

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Monday urged the UN member states to strengthen international unity before the second anniversary of the coup in Burma.

“As requested by the Security Council, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy will coordinate closely with the new ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) President’s Special Envoy to engage intensively with all relevant parties in Burma to achieve the end of violence and support a return to democracy,” the letter continues.

The head of the UN recalled that the international organization “commits to remain” in the country to “address the multiple vulnerabilities derived from military actions since February 2021″, for which it has requested — as a priority — ” full and unimpeded access to all affected communities.

“STRONG CONDEMNATION OF ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE”

“This Wednesday marks two years since the Burmese Army overthrew and arbitrarily detained members of the democratically elected civilian government,” lamented Guterres, who “continues to show his solidarity with the Burmese people.”

Likewise, it has “strongly condemned all forms of violence as the multidimensional crisis continues to deteriorate and fuel serious regional implications”, while it has supported the “democratic aspirations” of the population in terms of “an inclusive, peaceful and just society , and the protection of all communities, including the Rohingya.

In this sense, Guterres has expressed his concern “over the declared intention of the armed forces to hold elections amid the intensification of aerial bombardments and the burning of civilian homes, together with the continuous arrests, intimidation and harassment of political leaders, civil society actors and journalists.

“Without conditions that allow the people of Myanmar to freely exercise their political rights, the proposed elections risk exacerbating instability,” he denounced, according to the statement.
