The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the attacks in recent weeks against the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is why it has asked both the Israeli Army and the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah to guarantee the security of the ‘blue helmets’.
“Against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line, (we) condemned the various incidents that have affected mission positions and injured personnel in recent weeks, including those on 29 October, November 7 and 8,” reads a statement issued by the president of the organization, the British representative Barbara Woodward.
The members of the Security Council have “urged all parties to take all necessary measures to respect the security of UNIFIL personnel and facilities,” said the diplomat, recalling that the ‘blue helmets’ “should never be the target of an attack.”
Likewise, they have reiterated their “full support” for the mission, underlining its role in supporting regional stability, and have expressed their “deep gratitude” to the countries that contribute troops. Finally, they have expressed their “deep concern” about civilian victims and the number of displaced people, as well as the destruction of civil infrastructure or damage to cultural heritage.
The Israeli Army unleashed a new invasion of Lebanon on October 1 after several weeks of intense bombings and attacks against the country, including the coordinated explosion of thousands of communication devices, after more than eleven months of fighting with Hezbollah in the border area. which have caused more than 3,300 deaths in Lebanese territory.
The resurgence in hostilities is part of the clashes that began more than a year ago, after Hezbollah attacked Israeli territory a day after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which led Israel to unleash a bloody offensive against the Gaza Strip, where more than 43,700 people have already died.
