The United Nations Security Council has called on Tuesday both the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to “restore calm” in the West Bank and promote de-escalation, urging the parties to refrain from “unilateral actions”.
Lana Zaki Nuseibé, representative to the United Nations of the United Arab Emirates, who holds the ‘pro tempore’ presidency of the organization, read a statement on Tuesday in which she explained that the Council met behind closed doors last Friday to discuss the latest report of the UN envoy for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland.
In this sense, the United Nations Security Council “has expressed regret for the loss of life” in the West Bank, at the same time that it has reiterated its call for “full respect for International Law and the protection of the civilian population.”
“(The States) emphasized the obligations and commitments of both the Israeli and Palestinian sides to condemn terrorism in all its forms,” Nuseibé read, adding that the authorities must ensure “accountability” against those “responsible for the violence”.
Israeli authorities announced Monday the construction of 5,700 new homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank after four settlers were killed in an attack last week in the Eli settlement, sparking a wave of retaliatory attacks by settlers who burned down homes and vehicles in the region and occupied Palestinian land.
One Palestinian was killed and twelve others injured in an attack carried out by hundreds of settlers against the town of Turmus Aya, after similar incidents that day after another attack carried out last Tuesday in the vicinity of the Eli settlement.
