Demands that it be based on resolution 2254 and that it “satisfy the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians”
Dec. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations Security Council has called for an “inclusive and Syrian-led” political process after the fall on December 8 of the regime of Bashar al Assad, who fled Damascus in the face of the advances of jihadists and rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), who have now appointed interim authorities to lead a transition.
The member countries of the organization, including Russia – who was one of Al Assad’s main allies – have indicated in a statement that this process must be based on the basic principles established by Security Council resolution 2254. and “meet the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians.”
The aforementioned resolution, approved in 2015, set a timetable for a political transition, including the creation of an inclusive and credible government, defined the process for drafting a new Constitution and called for free and fair elections under UN supervision, although It never materialized.
Thus, they have stressed that this political process must “protect” all Syrian citizens and allow them to “determine their future in a peaceful, independent and democratic manner”, while reaffirming their “firm commitment” to “sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria”.
In this sense, the countries of the UN Security Council have insisted on the need for “Syria and its neighbors to mutually avoid any action or interference that could undermine the security of the other”, in the presence of military personnel from Turkey, Israel and United States in different parts of the country and the hundreds of Israeli bombings since December 8.
Specifically, they have requested that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement on the Golan Heights be respected and has asked the parties to “remain calm and reduce tensions”, after Israeli troops have occupied the “buffer zone” and taken control of the Syrian side of Mount Hermon and other nearby areas.
The signatories have also emphasized the importance of preventing the resurgence of the Islamic State jihadist group and have stressed that Damascus must comply with UN Security Council resolutions on unconventional weapons, in reference to Al Assad’s chemical weapons program. .
