The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) celebrated this Monday the validation presented to the agreement to appoint a new governor in the Central Bank by the two parallel administrations in the country with the aim of putting an end to the crisis within the organization following the dismissal of its head in August, which caused a new confrontation between the rival governments in the African nation.

In the High Council of State, based in Tripoli and validated by the UN, up to 112 members have given the ‘green light’ to the agreement signed last week, a decision that came after the House of Representatives, close to the authorities of the east, did the same, according to the news portal The Libya Observer.

“UNSMIL welcomes the approval by the House of Representatives of the candidates for Governor and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, in consultation with the High Council of State in accordance with Article 15 of the Libyan Political Agreement and the signed agreement by both Chambers on September 26,” the Mission announced on its X social network account.

Following this, he called on both parties to guarantee a “smooth transition” of the new board of directors of the banking institution, whose board of directors must be appointed within a period of two weeks and “in accordance” with the aforementioned agreement.

“Competent and responsible leadership of the Central Bank, including a board of directors, is essential to restore trust among the Libyan people and credibility in the global financial system. It is also a sign of hope for more transparent and accountable governance of resources. of the Libyan people,” added UNSMIL.

Likewise, he has asked all the country’s institutions to withdraw “all unilateral decisions taken in the context of the Central Bank crisis” and has urged to end the closure of oil fields to resume production and exports and so on. channel the income from this vital resource”.

Finally, UNSMIL has assured that this signature is a “sign of hope for progress in the future in an inclusive political process” in view of the holding of general elections that will put an end to the democratic transition process that will give rise to “sustainable peace, stability and economic recovery.”

The agreement includes the nomination of Mohamed Isa Belgasim for the position, with Marei Muftá Rhayel al Barasi as deputy governor. Representatives of the two parallel administrations signed an agreement on Thursday to appoint a new governor at the Central Bank.

Currently, Libya is divided into two administrations after the House of Representatives terminated the mandate of Abdul Hamid Dbeibé due to the postponement of the presidential elections in December 2021 and appointed Fazi Bashaga to the position, later suspended from office. and replaced by Osama Hamad. Dbeibé rejected the decision and chose to remain in office until elections were held.
