The United Nations mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has warned this Tuesday that the authorities established by the Taliban in the country have prevented its female staff from entering one of its offices, as well as working, in the province of Nangarhar (east) .
“We remind the de facto authorities that United Nations entities cannot operate and provide vital assistance without female personnel,” the mission said in a brief statement on its official Twitter profile.
The Ministry of Economy of Afghanistan’s Taliban authority issued a decree in December ordering all NGOs, whether national or international, to suspend women’s employment contracts until further notice.
After a series of protests, as well as warnings from various organizations to halt humanitarian aid, the ministry’s spokesman, Abdul Rahman Habib, stated in January that women could work in any NGO they wanted.
The authorities established by the Taliban have decreed since August 2021, when they came to power, laws to prevent access to education for girls and women, as well as other measures that prevent them from having freedom of movement, or even working in humanitarian agencies, on which practically the entire Afghan population depends.
