The World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations has shown this Friday its concern about the food crisis in Sri Lanka.
“We are deeply concerned about the impact of the current economic and political crisis on the people of Sri Lanka. Food shortages and rising prices have a particularly adverse effect on children and women. We consider it an urgent priority to address the needs immediate food and nutritional supplies,” reads the WFP press release.
Nearly 6.3 million people–3 out of 10 households–are food insecure and in need of assistance. Recent WFP surveys indicated that 61 percent of families resort to at least one measure to cope with food shortages, mechanisms that include eating less, consuming less nutritious foods and even skipping meals altogether.
For this reason, the PMA operation aims to help 3.4 million people in the Asian country, as reported in the letter whose purpose is to thank the Norwegian Government for its contribution to Sri Lanka.
Norway is contributing 5 million Norwegian kroner (500,000 euros), which is more than 185 million Sri Lankan rupees to the World Food Program’s efforts to help the most vulnerable groups in the country, as reported by Trine Joranli Eskedal, Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
