The UN human rights office calls for an investigation into Israel's "illegal" attack in Tulkarem

Calls for a “thorough, rapid, independent and transparent investigation” into the bombing

Oct. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has asked to investigate the “illegal” attack carried out by the Israeli Army on a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Tulkarem, which has left at least 18 dead and dozens injured.

“This incident is another clear example of Israeli forces’ systematic use of lethal force in the West Bank, which is often unnecessary, disproportionate and therefore illegal,” the office said in a statement.

For this reason, it has demanded that the Israeli authorities carry out “a thorough, rapid, independent and transparent investigation” into the attack in Tulkarem so that “the perpetrators of violations” against Human Rights “are held accountable.”

The office has explained that “the destruction of an entire building full of people by aerial bombardment shows a blatant disregard for Israel’s obligations” with respect to Human Rights. Likewise, he has reiterated that this “is part of a very worrying pattern of illegal use of force.”

According to information from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, “the majority of those killed were not armed nor were they wanted by Israeli forces and were murdered in their homes or while walking down the street.”

“Among those murdered was an entire family of five members, including two children, who lived in the attacked building. In total, among those murdered there are at least three children and two women,” he stressed in his statement.

The bombing was carried out against a well-known cafe in the Al Hamam neighborhood of Tulkarem. The Army indicated this Friday that seven of the deceased belonged to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Islamic Jihad.

Among them is, according to the Israeli Army, Ghaith Radwan, whom they attribute to an important position within Islamic Jihad. However, Palestinian media suggest that he would be part of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the splinter armed wing of the main party of the Palestinian Authority, Al Fatah.

The Army has stressed that the main target of its operation was a Hamas commander, Zahi Yaser Abdelrazaq Ufi, who according to information from Israeli Intelligence, was preparing a terrorist attack on the anniversary of the start of the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip. on October 7.
