MADRID Jan. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, met this Sunday with the new Syrian Foreign Minister, Hasan al Shibani, also known as Zaid al Attar, in a meeting held on the sidelines of the international meeting of heads of diplomacy on the future of the Arab country after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime.
“Today, in Riyadh, I had a constructive meeting with the acting foreign minister of Syria, focused on advancing the inclusive, Syrian-led and controlled political transition process and addressing the challenges in post-Assad Syria,” he said. Pedersen stated through a brief statement published by his office on the social network X.
He also explained that he participated in the Riyadh meeting at the invitation of the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and added that he “welcomed the strong message of support for the Syrian people and the desire to help the interim authorities during this critical phase.
“We have emphasized the need for an inclusive and credible transition led by the Syrians, together with a genuine international commitment to support the Syrian people to peacefully navigate the transition and rebuild their country,” he said before reaffirming the readiness of the UN to support Syria and the Syrian people “to face this historic opportunity and challenge.”
Bin Farhan closed the meeting by calling for the lifting of the sanctions imposed “on the previous regime”, alleging that their continuity “hinders the aspirations of the Syrian people for development, reconstruction and stability.” He has also highlighted the “positive steps” adopted by the new Syrian authorities to preserve the institutions of the State” and dialogue with the parties.
