The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, has deplored this Wednesday the “appalling” attack carried out last Monday against a commercial convoy in Burkina Faso that was transporting basic products to the city of Djibo and that resulted in the lives of eleven people.

This has been communicated by the spokesman for the Secretary General of the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, detailing that Guterres expresses “his sincere condolences” to the families of the victims, as well as to the people of Burkina Faso.

“The secretary general deplores the attack on a commercial convoy, escorted by the national armed forces and transporting basic products, to the city of Djibo, in Burkina Faso,” says the statement released by Dujarric.

The UN has called on the Burkina Faso authorities to spare no effort to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators of this “heinous” attack, and has called on all parties to ensure that civilians do not suffer the consequences of the conflict.

In this sense, Guterres reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to continue collaborating with the African country and international partners to improve the protection of civilians, deal with humanitarian problems and promote lasting peace and prosperity while respecting the Human rights.

Last Monday at least eleven soldiers died and thirty were injured, including a civilian, after a supply convoy was attacked by armed men.

The convoy, which was being escorted by the country’s Army, was the target of an attack on a road near the town of Gaskindé, about twenty kilometers from Djibo, in the north of the country, according to the Radio France International station ( RFI).

The leader of the Burkina Faso military junta, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, warned before the 77th United Nations General Assembly that terrorism in the region “jeopardizes” international peace and security, since “no measure” can prevent terrorism from spreading if the Sahel is left alone.
