MADRID Jan. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, denounced this Friday the “terrible” impact of the “Israeli onslaught” on the health systems in the Gaza Strip, whose protection is “essential.”
“A human rights catastrophe continues to unfold in Gaza before the eyes of the world,” Turk warned the UN Security Council in an emergency session called by Algeria to discuss the collapse of the health system in Gaza.
Thus, he referred to the “destruction” last Friday of the Kamal Adwan hospital. “Some staff and patients were forced to leave the hospital, while others, including the director general, were detained, and there are many reports of torture and ill-treatment,” he detailed.
Turk has insisted that Israeli military operations in and around hospitals have had a terrible impact at a time of massive demand for healthcare.
It has also mentioned that more than 12,000 seriously ill patients are waiting to be evacuated, while evacuations continue at an extremely slow pace.
“[Los ataques ] have been especially devastating for certain Palestinian civilians. “Six babies have been reported to have died of hypothermia in the last few days alone,” he denounced.
More than 45,650 people have died in the Gaza Strip due to the military offensive launched by Israel in response to the attacks of October 7, 2023, according to the new balance published this Friday by the Gaza Ministry of Health, which puts the number of victims at 77. fatalities and 145 injuries registered in the last 24 hours.
