The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has shown his “deep sadness” for the “tragic incident” recorded on Saturday at a soccer stadium in Indonesia, where at least 125 people died due to an invasion of the field and the subsequent human stampede caused by the police response.

Guterres has conveyed his “sincere condolences” to the relatives of the victims and has asked the authorities for a “quick” and “thorough” investigation and to “take all necessary measures to prevent such a tragedy from repeating itself.”

The Indonesian Security Minister, Mohammad Mahfud, announced this Monday the creation of an independent group to investigate what happened and stated that “the team is expected to finish its work in two or three weeks.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has given an order to suspend all matches in the national league until what he has described as a “true humanitarian tragedy” is cleared up. “This cannot be repeated in the future,” added the president on Sunday during an appearance before the nation.
