The UN asks the M23 to respect the ceasefire in the DRC

March 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, on Monday called on the rebel group M23 to respect the ceasefire signed last week and thus put an end to the violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The Secretary General calls on the M23 to respect the ceasefire to create the conditions for its complete and effective withdrawal from all occupied areas in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” a Guterres spokesman said in a statement.

Guterres has thus condemned “all violence against civilians” and has reiterated his call on all Congolese and foreign armed groups to “lay down their arms and disarm without conditions”. He has also called on the parties involved to guarantee humanitarian access to the affected population with guarantees for civilians and respecting International Humanitarian Law.

The fighting has already left more than 600,000 additional displaced since March 2022 in North Kivu, according to the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
