The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, urged the Egyptian authorities on Wednesday to guarantee the possible holding of protests during the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP27), which will take place from this Sunday in the country.
Turk has thus requested that “effective participation” of civil society be “guaranteed” and has lamented that there are problems in accrediting members of civil society. “Your right to freedom of expression must be respected,” she said in a letter.
Thus, he has asserted that the right to freedom of expression “must be respected” and has echoed the comments made by various organizations for the defense of Human Rights, who fear being excluded from the conference.
Turk, for his part, has insisted on the importance of achieving a “closeness on the part of society” to “deal with the greatest challenges facing the country.” “Decisions on climate change, included in this meeting, must be transparent and inclusive, particularly for those most affected,” he said.
In this sense, he has denounced that the space of civil society “is being restricted” in many places, which has led to the “violation of Human Rights in favor of extreme positions”.
