The creator of the game and co-creator of the series The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, told the press why the story of Bill and Frank had to be different from the original video game regarding the third episode of the series. If you have not yet seen the latest installment last Sunday on the HBO Max platform, we advise you not to continue reading because we will advance details of the argument.
SPOILER ALERT
This is how things go in the series The Last of Us. After a deal falls through, Joel and his smuggling partner Tess (Anna Torv) are hired by a violent idealistic group known as the Fireflies to break Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of a heavily fortified quarantine zone and to a distant outpost. of fireflies. Although the smugglers initially want nothing to do with the job, they soon realize Ellie’s importance when she reveals that she is immune to the fungal infection plaguing the world.
Following Tess’s death, Joel and Ellie arrive in the town of Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett). Unfortunately, they find the couple long dead. Through flashbacks, the audience learns about the lives of Bill and Frank from the chaos of the outbreak to their mutual suicide 16 years later. Although Bill and Frank are part of the game, their story differs greatly from the series.
Druckmann noted that he wanted to take advantage of the television medium and explore the characters in a way that would have been difficult to depict in a video game.
“We took advantage of a medium that is very different from gaming so that we could change the perspective. We don’t have to stay with our two heroes for the entire trip, and we don’t have to stay at the same time and place. In fact, we could jump a little bit in time. And that gave me the opportunity to tell this kind of story. So when Craig [Mazin, cocreador de la serie] He introduced it to me completely, it evolved over time, but it was mostly there. And again, the character’s faith is 180 degrees different from what happens in the game. It was so beautiful and moving that it hit the mark as far as talking about the issues and raising the stakes for Joel and Ellie in an interesting way. Although we’re getting so far off track that I felt completely comfortable saying, ‘Absolutely, let’s do it. This is a great idea’”.
The story of Bill and Frank in the video game
Bill and Frank’s story has been one of the show’s biggest departures from the source material. Where Joel and Ellie find Bill and Frank dead in the series, the original game had Bill very much alive. The character shows up to help Joel and Ellie track down a car battery so they can meet up with Tommy in Wyoming. As players navigate the city with Bill, they quickly realize how nervous he is when he tells a story about losing a companion he once loved.
Discovering there was no battery and with a horde of Infected following them, the group escape to a house to find Bill’s former partner Frank dead by an apparent suicide. A note left behind reveals that Frank came to resent Bill and his awkward attitude. Frank decided to sneak out and steal the car battery to escape the city, but he ended up getting bitten in the process. The original game depicted a much more sour partnership between Bill and Frank than the romantic journey in the third episode of the series.
