18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Taliban publicly whipped eleven people on Friday in the Afghan city of Faizabad, in the province of Badajshan (northeast), after being convicted of “moral crimes and adultery” by the Supreme Court.
The court has indicated that the punishments were imposed before a large number of people who went to a sports center in the city to see the whipping, in which senior officials of the fundamentalist group were present.
According to information collected by the Afghan news agency Jaama Press, this is the first time that the Taliban have officially confirmed the application of this type of punishment in Badajshan, although they had already announced lashings of convicts in other parts of Afghanistan.
The lashings started in November 2022, after the Taliban leader, Mullah Hebatulá Ajundzada, called on the judges to apply the ‘sharia’ in their rulings, including the death penalty. Thus, about 250 people have received lashes since then.
