The authorities established by the Taliban in Afghanistan have denounced that the latest sanctions announced by the United States represent a violation of the peace agreement signed in February 2020 in the Qatari capital and have highlighted that they are harmful to both countries.
“We convey to the United States that the continuation of these sanctions does not benefit either the United States or Afghanistan. They go against the Doha Agreement,” said Taliban spokesman and Afghan Deputy Minister of Information, Zabihulá Muyahid, as reported by the Afghan television network Tolo TV.
“We want these sanctions to be withdrawn and efforts must be made to normalize relations between the two countries,” he said, after the US State Department announced restrictions on the delivery of visas to members of the Taliban due to the “repression” against women. and girls in the country.
For his part, the spokesman for the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Abdulqahar Balji, underlined through a message on his Twitter account that “the recent announcement by the United States Department of State regarding visa restrictions on some officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is an impediment to the development of relations between the two states.”
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, indicated that the sanctions were applied for “being responsible or complicit in the repression of women and girls in Afghanistan through restrictive policies and violence”, including the continued closure of women’s institutes in the Central Asian country. .
“Despite public assurances that they would respect the human rights of all Afghans, the Taliban have issued and enforced a series of policies and edicts that effectively bar Afghan women and girls from full participation in public life, including access to secondary education and work in most industries,” he explained.
Blinken also called on other countries to adopt “similar measures” and to “continue to send a collective message that only a government in Afghanistan that represents all its people and protects and promotes the human rights of all people can be considered legitimate.”
