July 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Taliban have denounced this Sunday that one of their troops has died and another has been injured in a shooting confrontation with the Iranian border guard, in a new incident between the Iranian forces and the Afghan fundamentalists.
The confrontation, on which Iran has not yet ruled, has occurred in the town of Darwish, Nimroz province, according to the commander of the Taliban border force, Mohamad Ebrahim Hewad, who has accused the Iranian troops of starting the hostilities, reports the Afghan chain Tolo News.
Iran and Afghanistan have an uneasy relationship. Although the Iranian authorities are supporting the Afghan economy with sales of tons of oil, clashes on the border are common and the Taliban have denounced the Iranian forces for mistreating Afghan refugees.
Iran is one of the main host countries for Afghan refugees. According to the latest figures communicated by the Government in October 2020, 780,000 of the 800,000 refugees that the country formally welcomes come from Afghanistan, but the real figure, including undocumented refugees, is around almost three million.
To this must be added that Iran and Afghanistan have been at odds for decades over the 1973 water sharing agreement, under which Afghanistan agreed to deliver an average of 820 million cubic meters of water per year to Iran. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly criticized Afghanistan for not honoring the agreement.
