The Swedish Parliament this Tuesday gave the ‘green light’ to the security cooperation agreement with the United States, signed at the end of last year by the Minister of Defense, Pal Jonson, and which gives Washington access to the Swedish military bases distributed throughout throughout the country afterwards.
That agreement was reached in a context marked by Sweden’s attempts to join the Atlantic Alliance. Finally, Sweden managed to join the bloc at the beginning of March after convincing Hungary and Turkey, the only member states that were opposed at that time.
Minister Jonson has expressed satisfaction that the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) has finally approved the agreement he sealed with the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin. “The agreement creates much better conditions for receiving support from the United States in the event of a crisis or war,” he said.
However, some political parties present in the Riksdag have been against the pact, since it allows the United States the use and even the deployment of troops in airports and military bases, according to information collected by Swedish public radio and television SVT.
Austin and Jonson signed a defense cooperation agreement in early December in order to “extend the breadth and depth of the partnership between the United States and Sweden in a considerably difficult security environment,” as both leaders acknowledged at that time.
