Five more deaths this Sunday bring to 61 the number of civilians killed in the capital due to the fighting between the Army and paramilitaries
16 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Sudanese Army has announced the opening of several humanitarian evacuation corridors starting at 4:00 p.m. and until, in principle, 7:00 p.m. this Sunday, to facilitate the escape of civilians in the middle of fighting between the military and the Rapid Support Forces , the main paramilitary group in the country.
“We have agreed with the United Nations to open humanitarian corridors daily for three hours,” the Army reported this Sunday in a statement collected by the Al Hadath channel.
The Army qualifies that the corridors will remain open “as long as they do not impede the right to respond in the case of any transgression by the rebel militia,” in reference to the paramilitaries.
At the same time, a new balance of the Sudanese Medical Committee has confirmed at least five deaths and 78 more wounded this Sunday in the capital, Khartoum. In all, 61 people have been killed and 673 others injured in the city since fighting broke out on Saturday.
This morning, the NGO Darfur Monitor has informed the British channel Sky that another 22 people have died in the town of Nyala, in the state of South Darfur and three other employees of the United Nations World Food Program in North Darfur, which would bring to 86 the total number of confirmed deaths since the start of hostilities; estimates impossible to verify given the chaotic situation that reigns throughout the country.
THE ICRC ASKS FOR FACILITIES FOR HUMANITARIAN AID
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has urged this Sunday all parties to “facilitate the work of humanitarian organizations, take all possible precautions to avoid civilian injuries and loss of life and guarantee rapid and safe access for ambulances and medical personnel.
“We are extremely concerned that the fighting is affecting densely populated areas. People are seeking refuge in their homes,” said Alfonso Verdú Pérez, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan.
“We call on all parties to facilitate the work of humanitarian organizations so that we can help those in need,” he added.
