The Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) could have signed a preliminary agreement during the negotiations that are taking place these days in the Saudi city of Jeddah.
In this “preliminary agreement of principles”, reported by the Saudi channels Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, both parties to the conflict would have promised to allow the passage of humanitarian aid, as well as to facilitate the movement of civilians fleeing the hot zones of confrontations to safer places.
They will also respect truces for humanitarian reasons, to facilitate the work of national and international agents and prevent looting of supplies, as denounced by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), which suffered the theft of several tons of food. and sanitary material.
They would have also promised to respect public infrastructure in the country and avoid harm to health workers, as well as all civilians in general.
The Sudanese army and the RSF began preliminary contacts over the weekend in the Saudi city of Jeddah, in what Saudi Arabia and the United States, which are trying to mediate in the process, have described as “pre-negotiation talks”. Both countries asked the parties for “seriousness” on Monday in order to make progress, with the aim of “agreeing on expanded negotiations for a permanent cessation of hostilities.”
The death toll from the fighting that broke out in mid-April in Sudan between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has risen to more than 600, according to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). .
The hostilities broke out on April 15 in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition open after the 2019 overthrow of Omar Hasan al Bashir, damaged by the October 2021 coup, in which the prime minister of unity, Abdallah Hamdok, was overthrown.
