The Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed on Tuesday a new one-week truce starting this Thursday after the latest attacks registered despite the ceasefire in force.

The head of the Sudanese Armed Forces and president of the Sovereign Transition Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, and the leader of the RSF paramilitaries, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, have given “in principle” their go-ahead to establish a truce between on May 4 and 11, as reported by the South Sudan Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The measure has been agreed after a telephone conversation with the South Sudanese president, Salva Kiir, who has highlighted the importance of achieving a “lasting ceasefire” in the neighboring country and has stressed the need to appoint representatives and launch a process of negotiation to achieve peace.

Likewise, the text indicates that the parties have agreed to appoint said representatives, although Kiir has also offered to give a deadline for the start of the talks.

“The rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Khartoum requires the leaders to reduce hostilities,” Kiir said, urging the parties to “use the seven-day truce properly.”

In this sense, the South Sudanese authorities have stressed that they remain “committed to seeking a rapprochement between the parties trained with an eye toward a lasting ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities that paves the way for a friendly political agreement.”

“We thank partners at the international level when it comes to helping the Sudanese people, especially in the face of the flow of refugees,” he concluded.

The hostilities broke out on April 15 in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition .
