With less than two months to go before the presidential elections in Brazil, the race is intensifying, especially between the two favorites, according to the polls: Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Although the projections of the specialists agree that both candidates will go to the second round, they still do not dare to assure who will win these elections.
Everything seems to indicate that the fight for the presidential chair in Brazil will be between only two candidates: Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Ignácio Lula da Silva. Although the trend of the latest polls indicates that the difference of 10 points between the two candidacies could decrease, this does not mean that there can be a surprise in the first round. The truth is that both candidates have deployed all their strategies to conquer the Brazilian electorate.
For example, the Bolsonaro government has allocated a new social assistance program focused on those most in need. A measure that according to Amílcar Salas Oroño, a researcher in Social Sciences at Celag, could bring the candidate closer to sectors related to his opponent.
“It is an electoral maneuver to promote this enormous package of social assistance, of income transfer, at this time. Most analysts say that, effectively, it will allow Bolsonaro to get a little closer, especially to the most humble sectors of Brazilian citizenship who are, preferably, supporters of Lula when voting. Bolsonaro would narrow the gap in the segment that would hardly vote for him.”
The strategies of both candidates are deployed. So what actions by Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva could define the future president of Brazil?
“In order for Bolsonaro to be able to become president again, this passage from the popular segments of Lulistas to Bolsonaristas should occur. For that to happen, they have to use that discourse of ‘we are not as bad as we were a while ago’, and that the scenario is already changing for the better”, says Salas Oroño.
“Instead, Lula will anchor his speech of expectations and his calls based on what his years in government were like to show that his government is not going to be closed and the call for better management of what these four years of Bolsonaro were. ”, adds the researcher.
It should be noted that this October 2, more than 156 million Brazilians are eligible to vote in the first round in presidential elections that polarize the country.
