The state funeral to honor the life and work of recently deceased former US president, Jimmy Carterwill be celebrated next January 9, a day on which national mourning will also be observed, announced the current US president Joe Biden.
“I designate January 9, 2025 as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I invite the American people to gather on that day in their respective places of worship to pay tribute to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our pain to join us in this solemn celebration,” Biden said in a statement released Sunday.
Biden also ordered that for the next thirty days, the Stars and Stripes flag will fly at half-mast in the country, its territories, military installations and diplomatic missions abroad “as an expression of public regret” for the death of the former Democratic president. and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The public funeral in Washington and ceremonies in Atlanta, in his home state of Georgia, will be followed by a private burial in Plains, where the former president was born and lived, according to the Carter Center.
In March 2023, Biden, an 82-year-old veteran legislator, announced that Carter asked him to give a speech after his death.
“He asked me to give his eulogy,” said the current president, who now in his words after hearing the news of the former president’s death recalled his “extraordinary moral leadership” and his “noble life, full of meaning and purpose.”
“May the memory of President Carter continue to be a light that guides us into the future. May his spirit continue to guide us in our nation and in our world,” Biden said.
Jimmy Carter led the United States between January 1977 and January 1981 as the country’s 39th president. After living a long life, most of it with his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter; He spent his last months in palliative care due to his deteriorating health after surviving cancer.
During his career inside and outside the White House, Carter emphasized the fight for human rights, democratic values, nuclear proliferation and global poverty. At the time of his death, at age 100, he held the record for the oldest former president in the history of the United States.
