The South Korean Police have called the head of the Presidential Security Service, Park Chong Jun, to testify for preventing the arrest this past Friday of the country’s former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, within the framework of the failed declaration of martial law promulgated last month by the former president.
The political crisis unleashed since then in the country experienced a new episode yesterday, when the Police staged a tense confrontation with Yoon’s security detail when he was going to execute an arrest warrant against the former president.
The Police could not comply with the order on Friday but the document is valid until January 6, so they could try again this coming Sunday or Monday at the latest, as reported by the official South Korean news agency Yonhap.
Meanwhile, the Senior Public Officials Crime Investigation Office (KOFIC), which is investigating the case, has again asked acting president and Finance Minister Choi Sang Mok to order the Presidential Security Service to Please give your full cooperation in the arrest warrant against former President Yoon.
Regarding the head of presidential security, the Yonhap agency indicates that he has refused to testify before the Police since he cannot “leave his post” in front of the presidential residence “not even for a moment,” according to media sources.
