He needs the support of at least eight deputies from the ruling party for the impeachment motion to go ahead.
Dec. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The main South Korean opposition party, the Democratic Party, has said that it will push for the vote on the motion against the president, Yoon Suk Yeol, for the adoption and subsequent lifting of martial law, to be this Saturday, in order to gain time in the face of a possible change of position among the ranks of the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP), which has already refused to support the motion, despite internal criticism of the president’s actions.
The deputy spokesperson of the formation, Cho Seung Rae, declared this Thursday that he intends to submit the impeachment motion against the South Korean leader this coming Saturday, around 7:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands), so that PPP deputies have enough time to reflect and deliberate on their decision regarding Yoon’s actions.
These statements reported by the state news agency Yonhap come after the motion signed by 191 deputies has been presented to the plenary session of the National Assembly. The impeachment bill must be put to a vote within the next 72 hours, as stipulated by legislation.
To move forward, the motion requires the support of a two-thirds majority of parliamentarians, which will need the support of at least eight PPP legislators.
The South Korean president’s party has already refused to vote in favor of the impeachment motion, despite the fact that members of his own party have criticized the decision taken on Tuesday by the president to declare martial law, a measure that was later revoked by the National Assembly of the Asian country.
Yoon announced martial law in an unexpected address to the nation in which he accused the opposition of sympathizing with North Korea after opponents – who have a majority in Parliament – pushed forward a budget measure and presented motions of dismissal against several senior officials.
