June 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of South Korea decided this Sunday to completely suspend the 2018 inter-Korean treaty, which they already partially interrupted in November, until “mutual trust” is restored between Pyongyang and Seoul, which in recent months have chained a series of actions that have increased instability on the Korean Peninsula.
This was announced by the National Security Council, which had met late on Sunday after the launch of hundreds of balloons with garbage and manure from North Korean territory to the south, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
North Korea has confirmed the launch of 3,500 balloons with “15 tons of garbage” in response to the sending of propaganda from South Korea, whose Army has reported the arrival of 720 objects of this type in recent days.
In November 2023, South Korean authorities approved the partial suspension of the aforementioned treaty, the signing of which reduced tensions between both countries, in response to the launch of a North Korean military satellite.
The North Korean authorities responded with a promise to restore military measures suspended under the agreement, signed on September 19, 2018 under the Administration of former President Moon Jae In, which called for stopping all hostile military activity between the two Koreas, establishing maritime zones of security and converting the Demilitarized Zone into a zone of peace, among other issues.
