At least a dozen members of the jihadist group Al Shabaab have died as a result of a confrontation between two rival factions of the organization in the Somali region of Mudug.
The confrontation occurred in the town of Amara after a group of militiamen, led by senior commander Muhyadin Daqare, announced their intention to leave the area to surrender to the Somali government security forces.
To prevent this, another senior commander, identified as Nunale, ordered his fighters to shoot to kill anyone who joined Daqara’s request.
The clashes, according to Somali government sources, have resulted in numerous militiamen being captured by their former comrades and an order from the group’s leadership that strictly prohibits its commanders from leaving their designated area of operations by vehicle, the Hiiran On portal reported this Sunday. Al Shabaab has not commented on this information.
Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
