The Somali Army announces almost 80 Al Shabaab jihadists killed in the latest military operations

MADRID 5 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Somali National Army reported this Saturday that almost 80 members of the jihadist organization Al Shabaab have died in the latest military operations in the country, and at least 50 of them have died in a single attack in the central region of Galgadud.

Specifically, the operation took place in the municipality of Elder, in a forest area between the towns of Bidda Issa and Gerile, where the militias had a base of operations.

The Army has indicated that the operation was carried out by its special forces, with international assistance. In addition, the troops neutralized a “vehicle loaded with explosives.”

Another 24 jihadists have died in another operation in the Lower Shabelle region, which has also left around thirty militiamen injured. The offensive has covered several towns in the area, according to the military statement collected by the Somali news portal Hiraan on Line.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism in the center of their efforts to stabilize the African country.
