He Socialist Party won the European elections in Portugal this Sunday, with 32.09% of the votes and eight seats, against the center-right coalition Democratic Alliance (AD), of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who obtained 31.12% of the votes and seven MEPs.

With 99.5% of the vote counting completed, the 21 seats in the European Parliament that correspond to Portugal have already been allocated.

In third position is the far-right formation Chega, which regresses with respect to the legislative elections and achieves 9.79% and two deputys, followed by Liberal Initiative (IL), with 9.07% and two seats. It is the first time that both forces enter the European Parliament.

Behind them are the Left Block (4.25%), with one seat and the Communist Party of Portugal (4.12%), with one MEP.

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, leader of AD, has already come out to recognize the defeat of his coalition congratulate the socialists.

If compared to the 2019 European elections, the PS has lost one seat, while the two parties that make up AD maintain the same number of MEPs they had.

More than 10.8 million Portuguese were called to go to the polls this Sunday to elect their 21 representatives in the European Parliament among the candidates of 17 political parties.
