MADRID Jan 15 () –
The general secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) of Portugal, Pedro Nuno Santos, confirmed this Tuesday that the parliamentary leader of his party, Alexandria Leitao, will be the socialist candidate for the municipal elections in the capital, Lisbon, which will be held in September .
Nuno has considered that this is the “right person” and that with this decision the PS shows a “sign of strong commitment”, highlighting that he is “one of the most important figures” of the party, behind him and the president of the PS, Carlos César, according to statements to the press collected by the Lusa news agency.
“The election of Alexandra Leitao for the Lisbon City Council is explained very simply. The capital is very important, Lisbon is poorly governed by the PSD (Social Democratic Party) and the current mayor (Carlos Moedas). For this reason, the PS “he had to make a big bet,” he explained.
In this sense, he stressed that this is an “example of the strong investment” that the PS is “making in Lisbon, a city where it is increasingly clear that Moedas is incapable of solving problems such as hygiene and safety, mobility and traffic and even housing. “He works very well on his image but is incapable of solving the problems of Lisbon residents,” he concluded.
Leitao, 51, was Minister of State Modernization and Public Administration (2019-2022) and, previously, Undersecretary of State and Education (2015-2019). In the last legislature, as a deputy, she was president of the parliamentary committee on Transparency and the Statute of Deputies.
The Lisbon City Council has been in the hands of the PSD since Moedas’ victory in the 2021 elections after the socialists held the mayor’s office for 14 years, most of them (from 2007 to 2015) with former Prime Minister António Costa at the helm. .
