The head of the list of the French social democratic coalition for the European elections, Raphaël Glucksmann, has advocated for the withdrawal of the candidates of the left-wing bloc of the New Popular Front in the second round if they are “incapable of defeating” the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen.
Glucksmann has spoken about a possible scenario in some constituencies in which in the second round voters have to choose in “a triangular” between a candidate from the New Popular Front, an candidate from the far right or a liberal candidate from the Renaissance party, led by French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Even when there is a triangle, I would not doubt that there would be a withdrawal if the New Popular Front candidates come third and fail to defeat the National Rally,” Glucksmann said in statements to France5, where he stressed that “the only objective “It must be that the extreme right does not achieve a majority in the National Assembly.
With this strategy, Glucksmann seeks to ensure that the National Group faces a real alternative in all constituencies, even and this is based on the need for the candidates of the New Popular Front, of which his own party, Plaza Pública, is a part.
In the last European elections, Glucksmann led the Wake Up Europe coalition, formed by the Socialist Party and Plaza Pública. The National Group won those elections with more than 31 percent of the votes, while the Social Democrats convinced just under 14 percent of the electorate.
In fact, it was the overwhelming victory of Le Pen’s party that motivated President Macron to call early legislative elections for June 30 and July 7. After the announcement, the main left-wing parties quickly agreed to promote a coalition in order to prevail over the far-right National Group and ‘Macronism’.
