The Slovak Parliament has recognized this Tuesday the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people that took place between 1931 and 1933, during the famine that occurred in the country when it was still one of the republics of the Soviet Union, led by that then by Joseph Stalin.

In the resolution, in addition to classifying the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Slovak deputies have expressed their regret for the Russian invasion of Ukraine and have specified that Moscow “violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the country.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski thanked the Slovak Parliament on his official Twitter profile for its decision, which contributes “significantly to restoring justice in history and honoring millions of innocent victims.”

Slovakia thus joins other countries, such as Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Ireland, or Germany, which have recognized the deaths resulting from that famine as genocide, which, following Kiev’s version, was caused by the mismanagement of Stalin’s Soviet Union and not because of failed harvests.
